Protect poultry workers from injuries, civil rights groups urge

The North Carolina Justice Center is one of the numerous civil rights groups that have filed a petition asking the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the United States Department of Agricultural to improve their protection of poultry workers. Even though America is the largest producer of beef and poultry across the globe, the scene behind the curtains may shock many meat consumers. Federal policies actually permit workers to work in unsafe working conditions that often leave permanent injuries.

OSHA looks into worker deaths in the communication tower industry

Whenever North Carolina residents drop a call and complain about their cellphone service, hoping that their network carrier will upgrade their network, they may not be aware of the risks involved in the actual process of upgrading. In fact, it is possible that the communication tower industry may be one of the deadliest in the country, given the relatively small size of the industry and the fact that 10 construction workers have already died in fall accidents since the beginning of this year. A 49-year-old North Carolina worker was among the fatalities reported this year, dying as a result of injuries sustained after falling almost 200 feet from a cellphone tower.

Focus on workplace hazards to reduce industrial accidents

In order to avoid work accidents, North Carolina employers may employ various techniques to promote safety in their workplaces. Where they fail to do so and workplace injuries take place, not only can an employee file for a workers' compensation claim, but the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) can investigate the accident and may hold the company responsible for its negligence. A recent investigation into an industrial accident at a prominent packaging company where there have been five accidental deaths in the last five years has now led to the levying of fines of almost $200,000 against the company.
